Why is healthcare interoperability important?
Interoperability in healthcare allows all software systems to communicate data. This means that all operations related to patient care in hospitals can collaborate. When a patient visits a doctor for a consultation, the doctor has access to his medical history, past drugs, recent treatments, and test and scan findings, for example. This will help the doctor obtain a better knowledge of the patient's health and make more informed clinical decisions.
In an emergency, people may not even be cognizant enough to notify doctors about their medical history. In such cases, doctors must be aware of the patient's medical history or risk endangering the patient's life with a treatment to which he may not respond. Healthcare interoperability allows doctors to have access to critical information for making critical medical decisions.
Interoperability allows non-clinical employees at hospitals to perform tasks such as billing, coding, claims, and so on, in addition to doctors. To summarise, interoperability streamlines all healthcare activities and enables the industry to fully capitalise on cutting-edge technologies.
